And when you are done looking at this site for the Scots input on football world-wide, here are two more.
For those who literally want to trace on the ground the local development of Scots and Scottish football in our own and other countries there is the newly available and ever-expanding site of:
The Scots Football Historians' Group
And on Scottish sports history in general but inevitably including fitba', see Andy Mitchell's inestimable:
Euro-Influencers,
As the nineteenth century became the twentieth the careers were coming to an end of players, who had developed the game post-1888 in Scotland, some of whom carrying it South, as well as those of others, non-Scots who had learned it from The Professors. Most would at that point simply step away from the game and whilst few would as yet take on the new role of Manager that was emerging from that of Club Secretary, more would coach, some employing their knowledge at home clubs and others abroad. Jake Madden of Dumbarton, Celtic and Scotland would probably be the first to go in 1905 to Prague. He would never come back, still openly honoured by the Slavia, the club that was created in his image. And others would follow, Cameron, and McWilliam, Hogan and Pentland amongst them, both pre- and post-War, in person and in philosophy, the traceable web of knowledge based on ideas formed by actually having played the game extending from points North as far east as Budapest, south to Madrid and to many points in-between. And in doing so the seeds were planted of the Hungarian game of the 1950s, the Dutch football of the 1970s, the German teams since the 1950s and Spanish and Belgian blossomings of more modern times.
