The Roll of Honour of Scots in World-Football
That Scots took football globally is, I hope, proven, if by nothing else than by the content assembled and contained in this blog. The great footballing institutions in England, the Football League and the Football Association were, in the case of the former, founded or, the latter, led and forged for a large part of their existence by folk from "Northern Britain" before being taken on by the "local populations". And this has been true across the World. Current clubs, again in England and elsewhere and at all levels, owe their very existence to the formational drive of Scots with a passion for the game. There are identifiably "Scots" clubs, the major ones and each needs to recognise and be recognised along with their founders; the smaller ones too, the multiple "Thistles" and "Caledonians". Then there are the officials, the trainers and coaches, the managers and administrators without whom the game could not exist, flourish and be assed on. And finally there are the players themselves, amateur, semi-pro and professional alike, for some of whom the game might have been a way to make or supplement a living, albeit abroad, for others just a social activity but for all a passion. These are the people, the Diasporan Scots, this world-wide roll seeks to honour, well over one hundred in all. Some are included in national Halls of Fame, something which Scotland noticeably lacks in any comprehensive form. Others have been identified by painstaking research over a decade. All deserve a marker - a plaque, a marker, a mural, a bust or even a statue - either where they were born in this country, where they made footballing mark or, indeed, both. The places have been identified, those deserving of honour identified, now there is work required here and elsewhere to transform the notional into solid realities and thus re-establishing Scotland's too often overlooked, indeed its proper, pivotal role and place in today's World's game.
